Little known San Onofre Beach, near San Clemente, California, was the place to be this second Wednesday in August for the annual Big Wednesday event. Bring your VW, surf board, and ditch work!

It has become an annual affair for many VW owners to head to the beach on the second Wednesday of August. This event was the brainchild of Rich Kimball who like so many of us, loves the surf movie Big Wednesday, released back in the late '70s. The idea is to celebrate summer, going to the beach in your VW (bus), and surf the day away. Forget about work, school, or paying the bills, today is all about re-living the good old days when all we had to worry about is how to get the beach and go surfing.
On this overcast and cloudy day at San Onofre, about 200 VWs filled to the brim with surfers and beach-goers alike. While the surf was small, and the sun did not shine until later on that afternoon, still, we ditched work, and went surfing!
