There were two VW drag sedans known as the Under Dog, both driven by Ron Fleming, but both were owned by Doug Gordon. The first sedan, which was painted bright Chevy orange, crashed early on, and it was replaced with another '60s sedan, painted white, magenta and blue.
Saying goodbye to Doug Gordon (aka the Dog)
Friends share their memories of Doug Gordon
On September 4, 2013, Doug Gordon lost his battle with cancer. Doug or "DOG" was a well known VW drag racer in the early '70s, who campaigned the famous "Under Dog" I/Gas sedan with long-time friend and fellow DKP club member, Ron Fleming. Doug was involved with VW drag racing up to about 1973, when he went to work for JPL in Pasadena, and later became a professional photographer. In more recent times, Doug wasn't seen at too many VW events, other than at the DKP reunion almost 20 years ago. Still, fellow DKP club members stayed in touch and tried to get him back into the VW scene. With his passing, a memorial was organized in his home town of Monrovia, California, where friends and fellow co-workers shared their memories of Doug. Needless to say, a gathering of DKP members drove their modified VWs to honor his life and their years of friendship.

At the DKP Club reunion (1999), Doug was presented the decklid off the Under Dog II, which had been stolen, er borrowed, and never returned until today. Here Dyno Don surprises Doug with this long-lost treasure.

This past weekend in England, a tribute to the memory of Doug Gordon by Russell Ritchie, by outfitting everyone with an official Under Dog T-shirt. The car shown here, is a replica of the Under Dog I. Photo by Julian Hunt.
Here is the back of the T-Shirt. Doug would have loved this touching tribute to his memory. Long live the "Dog"! Photo by Julian Hunt.
