Hot VWs Magazine's Drag Day Kicks off the 2014 VW drag racing season
Huge turnout, tons of action, free swap meet, warm (!) weather... how can you go wrong!
It was a VW race that everyone in southern California was waiting for, the first Hot VWs Drag Day at Irwindale Speedway, sponsored by Pierside Parts. Under rather warm sunny skies, a capacity crowd was on hand to enjoy not only 1/8th mile racing, but a large swap meet, show-n-shine car show, and tons of new part vendors. What a turnout! For a complete write up of this day's event, look to Hot VWs June issue for complete results.
Paul Schley brought out the real Lightning Bug II for some exhibition runs. This time out, this famous gasser was fitted with a period-correct H/Gas engine ready to touch the 6-second barrier once again. And he got close, with a 7.19/100mph pass early on.... That 40-year old gasser still has what it takes (Paul too)!
Doug Gonzales on the bars!
Troy Palmer on the bumper!
Manx-style buggy hooking up.
Volkschancellors Racing Team still in the thick of all the action! Awesome.
Mike Lawless driving his turbo-powered "Flawless" Ghia.
Scott Kelley way up in his Fastback S/S gasser.
Is it a Baja Bug, or a bracket racer? We think both. Ed Economy's choice for the day.
Karl Koppenhaver takes yet another race for the RLR Racing Team!
