This simple but effective means of retaining your spare tire from would-be thiefs... way back when!

Period-Correct Security Device

May 21, 2013

If you own a classic VW, then there is a very good chance that your car was fitted with one of these dealer-installed security devices, designed to prevent the spare tire from being stolen. Back in the sixties, many U.S. VW dealers would add this device to the invoice for about $6 extra. It does not exactly have a VW part number, rather, it was made from bits and pieces most dealers had laying around. Sure it is corny by today's standards, but it is part of VW history.
