The Beetle Dune made an appearance at the Detroit Auto Show today, just like it's older brother did back in 2000. But will this one ever see the light of day? VW made no mention of any type of release date.

Volkswagen Recycles their Dune Concept for 2014

Haven't we seen this before? Or maybe it's just a desert mirage.
January 13, 2014

Today, Monday, January 13, 2014, Volkswagen's big news at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit was a bit of old news. Today, VW made much to-do about their latest concept vehicle, based on the Beetle. They called this one the Beetle Dune. But wait, didn't we see the (new) Beetle Dune back at this same show in 2000? Both concepts are based on an off-road version of their popular second, now third generation Beetle. Both had wider wheels and larger tires, flared fenders and some real outdoor styling. So, should we get excited about this one? It's now up to Volkswagen to make the next move.
Ah, the VW Dune at the dunes.
